About ISME Teacher Forum

History

The Teacher Forum was conceived as part of ISME’s 2024–2026 Biennium Plan to support practicing music educators through mentoring and professional development. Initiated under the leadership of ISME President Patricia González-Moreno and Julie Ballantyne, the Forum was envisioned as a space for global exchange and capacity building among teachers. These early discussions laid the groundwork for a broader, more structured initiative - the International Teacher Professional Development Center (ITPDC) - approved by the ISME Board in December 2024 and launched in 2025.

International Teacher Professional Development Center (ITPDC)

Empowering, Equipping, and Engaging Music Educators Worldwide

The International Teacher Professional Development Center (ITPDC) was created by the Teacher Forum to strengthen the professional capacity of music educators across diverse global contexts. Supported by ISME’s Commissions and Special Interest Groups, ITPDC provides research-based, practical teaching strategies and resources that promote excellence and intercultural learning.

Through coordinated international workshops and accessible online content, the ITPDC offers structured, certified professional development aligned with ISME’s mission and values. A central feature of the ITPDC is its global community of practice, connecting ISME member teachers for mentorship, knowledge exchange, and collaborative growth. By fostering sustained dialogue and shared innovation, the ITPDC equips educators to meet the evolving needs of music teaching and learning worldwide.

Since its launch in 2025, the ITPDC has hosted a series of successful online workshops exploring creativity, pedagogy, and social engagement in music education. The inaugural keynote session in August 2025, led by Professor Pamela Burnard (University of Cambridge), set the tone for the Teacher Forum’s vision of unlocking teacher research and creative practice. This was followed by successful professional development series in the subsequent months, addressing varied themes such as navigating change in the classroom, reimagining classroom cultures, and connecting through diverse pedagogical and value systems, all reinforcing the ITPDC’s role as a global hub for teacher learning.

Mission

The International Teacher Professional Development Center (ITPDC) aims to provide structured opportunities for professional development, which enhance the skills and knowledge of music educators worldwide. The ITPDC serves as a central hub for delivering certified, high-quality professional development (PD) to ISME members, reflecting ISME's core values of excellence, inclusion, and lifelong learning in music education.

All PD activities are aligned with internationally recognized standards. Certificates of completion are issued to participants, formally documenting their learning and supporting the continued development and professional recognition of music educators.
