InsideISME

ISME advances music education worldwide through a diverse network of Commissions, Special Interest Groups, Committees, and Forums. Together, these groups drive research, professional development, advocacy, and community engagement, creating spaces where educators, students, and leaders collaborate to share ideas, build capacity, and shape the future of global music education.

Commissions

ISME hosts eight Commissions that provide international leadership in key areas of music education. Each Commission focuses on a specific field ranging from research and early childhood to community music and policy making, and advances dialogue and collaboration among scholars and practitioners worldwide.

Led by appointed Commissioners, including a Chair, each group organizes biennial pre-conference seminars as well as year-long online professional development initiatives that reflect current global research and practice. The Commissions form the intellectual backbone of ISME’s work and offer meaningful entry points for students and early-career professionals to engage in ISME’s global community.

Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

ISME’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs) unite members around specific themes in music education. Member-driven and time-limited, SIGs foster collaboration, innovation, and advocacy through conference sessions, publications, and ongoing dialogue, often serving as incubators for new ideas and initiatives within ISME’s global community.

Committees

ISME’s committees provide strategic guidance and oversight across key areas of the Society’s work, including advocacy, publications, membership, and awards. Standing Committees carry out ongoing responsibilities that support ISME’s mission, while Ad Hoc Committees are formed as needed to address specific projects or reviews. Together, they ensure continuity, accountability, and the long-term impact of the Society’s activities.

Forums

ISME’s Student and Teacher Forums foster connection, learning, and professional growth within the global music education community. The Student Forum offers free online sessions and mentorship with subject-matter experts, supporting students as they navigate key areas such as writing, publishing, and career development. The Teacher Forum provides members-only online professional development led by experienced educators, sharing innovative practices and insights from around the world. Together, they strengthen ISME’s mission to support music educators at every stage of their journey.
