Our History:From Vision to Global Movement

Evolution of the Society

The International Society for Music Education (ISME) was founded in 1953 in Brussels, Belgium, following a UNESCO-led conference that recognized music education as essential to general education and to rebuilding peace, connection, and intercultural understanding after World War II. Guided by pioneers including Charles Seeger, Frank Callaway, and Leo Kestenberg, ISME has since championed music education as a human right, grounded in cultural diversity, democracy, and dialogue.

ISME has grown into a global, interdisciplinary network supporting inclusive, lifelong access to music learning for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Members in more than 80 countries share a commitment to evidence-based practice, sustainable cultural heritage, and music’s role in fostering international cooperation. In 2015 a Constitution, Bylaws and Policy Review Working Committee was formed and from their work a new Constitution and Bylaws were created, which was approved at the 2018 General Assembly in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Originally affiliated with UNESCO and the International Music Council, ISME is now an independent, globally engaged organization. Its biennial World Conference, first held in 1953, remains a cornerstone of international collaboration, supported by Commissions, Special Interest Groups, Forums and partnerships in more than 90 countries that continue to advance dialogue and innovation in music education worldwide.

History Standing Committee

History establishes the grounding of people, place, and purpose. The story of ISME has been rich and diverse for more than 70 years. The History Standing Committee (HSC) focuses on the past-present-future of chronicling ISME for the mission of our society. Further information can be found at the HSC Webpage.

Anniversary

In 2003 ISME celebrated its 50th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Society published "Toward A Global Community - The International Society for Music Education 1953 - 2003" authored by Marie McCarthy.

The History Standing Committee has created a separate website with more information about the history of the Society.

Registered in the United States

Today, ISME is officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States, recognized as tax-exempt under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. While its home is in the U.S., ISME’s vision and membership are truly global, reflecting an enduring commitment to intercultural exchange, equity, and access in music education.
